First Generation

1. Hannah WILKS was born about 1709 in Wales. She died in Mongongalia, Virginia.

We know (from the Core book, "The Monongalia Story, a Bicentennial History by Earl Core.") that she and Samuel had 8 sons. It is fairly certain that Thomas, Francis, John, Jacob, Philip, Doctor, and Samuel, II, are sons. It is speculated in the book that they had 2 more children, Asa and Mary.

Hannah WILKS and Unk. JONES were married about 1728 in New Castle, Delaware. Unk. JONES was born about 1708 in Wales. He died about 1731 in Wales.

The way I understand it (from a book I have), Jacob Jones was actually an Indian. Since his parents are untraceable to date, I'm accepting this conclusion to be true. [-PLO]

I've been fascinated by this story since I first started on our genealogy. I had read about the Indian kidnappings on the Internet but at the time I had no idea this line was connected to our Current line - my grandmother being Althea Current. The story will also take you back in time to Detroit and even MaComb County. You can even find references to this story at the MaComb Library.

In this collection, you will find many Indian stories and will even learn about Simon Girty (next chapter). It's a name I'll never forget. He was one of those people genealogists hide in the closet, then lock the door and throw away the key.

However, he ended up being the brother-in-law to Mary "Polly" Jones (daughter of Jacob Jones) who was kidnapped by Indians. Though the Currents love to speak about the Jacob Jones story, you'll never hear them mention Simon Girty. I had to find that totally on my own and it took me years. [-PLO]

Hannah WILKS and Samuel (Thomas) LEWELLEN were married about 1730 in Wales. Samuel (Thomas) LEWELLEN was born in 1698 in Wales. He died about 1798 in Augusta (now Monongalia), Virginia (now West Virginia).

The earliest known ancestor of the Jones family was the mother of Jacob, who married for the second time Samuel Lewellen and removed with him from near Wilmington, Deleware, to Loudoun County, VA, where they lived until about 1770.

The Lewellens then moved across the mountains and settled on Cheat River, establishing the old Lewellen Ferry, in Monongalia County, Virginia, now West Virginia, near the Pennsylvania line. Samuel Lewellen obtained a grant of land there in 1771, and his name is prominently mentioned in the old records among the early settlers of the county. [- M Dean Jackson]
