Peters Township -
"Mention of the township in the Cumberland County records is made in 1751, raising
the presumption that it was organized by the court soon after that county was
erected. ..the names of early settlers indicated Scotch-Irish people...among
the first settlers were William McDowell, born in the north of Ireland and came
to America between 1714 and 1720 and to Peters Township in 1730 or 1731. In 1759
people were driven away by the Indians and the McDowells went to Wrightsville,
where William died at age of seventy seven. His sons were John, William, Nathan,
James and Thomas. (p. 568).
"It is much to be regretted that the names of these early pioneers, who strugged
so heroically against the wilds of the forest and the depredations of the savages,
have not been more carefully preserved. We append, however a list of taxable
names in 1751 and 1752. From it may be learned the general locations of these
settlers:
In Antrim Twp. - which embraced the territory now in Antrim, Washington, and
Quincy Twps - ...John Chambers; William Erwin; Robert Erwin; James Finely; John
McDowell; ..."
In Lurgan Twp: ...William Erwin; John Erwin; several Finleys (John Sr.; John
Esq.; James, Robert; Andrew)...
In Peters Twp. - JAMES ERWIN." (p. 154-5).
"McDowell's Mill - This fort was know by several names, as 'Fort at McDowell's
Mill' McDowell's Mill' or 'McDowell's'. It was named in honor of its founder
John McDowell, who settled at and around the present site of Bridgeport, shortly
after the Chambers settlement was made at Falling Spring. He erected a mill of
logs, and some thirty yards from it a rude two story log house with a liberal
supply of port holes. The mill and fort sites are now [1887] owned by Mr. Jacob
Wister" (p164)
Early Land Titles
In Peters Twp. earliest land titles were for Rev. John Black and Samuel Harris
3/1787; then...Samuel Irwin in right of Henry Johnston 3/4/1742, John McDowell12/26/1752;
James McDowell 4/30/1773; his neighbors were John McDowell, Nathan McDowe.

- Robert Dews = Robert Due (grandfather of Diana Rogers,
Cherokee wife of Sam Houston)
Alexander Cameron = British Agent to Cherokees since 1868; he had at least 3
mixed-blood children. [John] McDonald, [Walter] Scott, [Nathaniel] Hicks, and
Anthony Foreman are my ancestors [Jerry Clark]. Other Indian Countrymen (white
traders with Indian wives) listed are [William] Springston, [Richard] Riley,
Proctor, John Christie, Cery [William Carey], Charles Beamer, John Brown (perhaps
the mixed-blood father of Catherine & David Brown?), [William] Campbell, Levett
[Lovett?] and Bench [John Benge?] are mentioned in Emmet Starr's OLD CHEROKEE
FAMILIES. John Vann and Joseph Vann were the progenitors of a wealthy Cherokee
family (Joseph was probably the father of Chief James Vann). John Vann (or his
son) married the daughter of The Terrapin. Who were Vernon, John Ramsay, Missourirross,
Luke, Samuel Benjamin, John Morris, John Yarwook, and John Seeke?
Note the Chiefs and warriors listed: The Great Warrior of Chota (Oconostota),
his son The Terrapin, his brother Categiskee (Kittagusta) and his nephew the
Raven of Chota. Others mentioned were The Bloody Fellow, The Bear, The Cowee
Warrior, The Young Turkey, Little Bird, and Jud's Friend (= Judd's Friend or
Oostenaca).

as well as his other sites he has, are now showing the name of Quatie Conrad
parents as GUNROD and OLLIE. And he has also changed the marriage date of Quatie
and Archibald Fields to bef 1807.... 3-16-2002....(I do NOT AGREE sm) and I might
add there are many many researchers who feel just as I do! sm
Further update as to James R. Hicks Site, he now shows that Quatie Conrad6 descends
from Gunrod5, Jennie Ani-Wa'Ya4, Oconostota3, Moytoy2, Amatoya1.

- Known as Zeke Fields. Wildly different dates given for
his death date. Source below says 1870, but his children's Miller Roll application's
say 1846.
- Beulah Benton Edmondson went to New York, where she road
the ticker-tape parade in Indian costume as a direct descendent of Pocahontas.
She met the wealty Richard Croker, long time Tammany Hall chief and married him.
The couple lived in a castle in Ireland. Her sister, Gonia had lived with Beulah
for a short time. Gonia was noted to say that she had crossed the Atlantic 22
times while Bula lived in Ireland. After the death of Mr. Croker, Beulah moved
with her sisters, father and mother to Palm Beach, Florida. Beulah was always
generous, and thoughtful of her family.
- Roy Birch .
- Jennie Bell is not listed in Starr's family groups for
either Grant 1-1-3-9-10-x nor Adair 1-1-3-1-x.
Jennie is also not listed in the 1851 Drennen roll, Delaware, family #868, with
the rest of this family.
It's quite possable that the History of the Adair Family got her confused with
John's wife, Jennie Bell nee Martin.
