Twelfth Generation

59. James IRVINE22,23 was born in 1622 in Drum Castle, Aberdeen, Scotland. He died in 1658 in Londonderry, Ulster, Northern Ireland.

Elson Irwin: NOTE: Just like Robert his older brother, the family at Drum did not recognize James' marriage in Northern Ireland.

NOTE: The Irwins of Drum admit that a James Irwin was the third son of Sir Alexander, but their official records show him as "unmarried" and nothing ever got back to the official source after he fled to Ireland. But they also admit that he was a "black sheep" and opposed their religious views, so they were not willing to be that closely connected to him, and shunned information concerning him. We know he went to Ireland, and it was not the wont of the Irwins to remain celibate. He undoubtedly took a wife and from that union (whether it was a legal marriage or not) came Jared Irwin (Gerard Irwin, it might have been).

Also, it was standard practice not to record much data on the "other" sons. Only the first son gets the ink in Scottish record keeping.

According "Irvine of Drum" by David A. McCormick: "James attended Scots College at Douay, France. We know he was alive in 1658 to receive a settlement of his father's estate. He had descendants in Ulster who settled in America (including some Covenantors who 'were not welcome at Drum.'

(The 1663 Hearthmoney Ross (page 179) shows a "James Irwin, resident at Bogside in the City of Londonderry.)

James had also been a political and religious refugee. He had been imprisoned in the Edinburgh Keep because he refused to acknowledge the divine right of the Covenantors to rule Scotland. His own son, Jared, was completely opposite in his views. James escaped from Tolbooth and fled to Northern Ireland.

James IRVINE and Louise (IRVINE) were married before 1655. James IRVINE and Louise (IRVINE) had the following children:
