John Wilson Alton of Byers, Pratt Co, Kansas, died in the Ninnescah Hospital
at 4:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon, Thursday, April 8, 1937, following a short
illness. Death was attributed to a fractured skull, sustained when he collapsed
near the Swinson garage late Monday afternoon.
John was born on May 31, 1874, in Vincennes, Knox Co, IN, the son of Joseph Alton
and Clarissa Jane (Wilson) Williams. He had lived in Pratt county, Kansas, for
the past 29 years. He was 62 years, ten months and seven days of age when death
occurred.
He married Mary Belle ‘Mollie’ Currant, the daughter of Louis D. Currant
and Charlotte Walls, on August 23, 1894, near Wellsford, Kiowa Co, KS. They had
seven daughters and a son who died in infancy.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in the
Methodist Episcopal church in Byers and interment will be in the Macksville,
Stafford Co, KS, cemetery. The Sappington-Calbeck mortuary is in charge.
Survivors include 4 daughters, Mrs. Maude Tompkins and Mrs. Mabel Tompkins, both
of Byers, Mrs. Naomi Nichols of Preston and Glenda Alton Nusbaum of Wichita;
one sister, Mrs. Jack Carr, Byers; and five brothers, William G. of Hopewell,
Frank of Belpre, Clyde and Ed of Farley, NM, and Ralph of Richards, Colo.
