Second Generation

2. William CURRENT1,2 was born about 1733 in Northern Ireland.2,3 He died on 10 Feb 1839 in Crowland Twp., Welland, Ontario, Canada.2 He was buried at Doan's Ridge Cemetery, Crowland Twp., Welland.2 [NOTICE: I've placed William here so I can upload this line along with the other Current lines. The Current researches believe that William is a brother of James 1 but so far there is no evidence of that whatsoever. IT IS MERELY A BELIEF. - PLO]

(This history was passed on to me by Nancy Hastie. It was written by a descendant of the Iowa Currents, who in turn descended from Loyalists, William Current and Esther Lemon, of Welland County, Ontario.)

The first record of the Current family dates from 1745. A family by the name of Current which consisted of three men that could have been brothers, left Ireland on a ship bound for New Jersey, U.S.A.

Due to the crowded and unsanitary conditions, the men were stricken with ship fever and only one son, or brother, William Current survived to reach our American shores, the promised land. He must have looked upon our friendly shores with some misgivings, as he was alone and probably had very few wordly goods. His day of gloom turned to sunshine when Elisah (Elijah?) Barton and his good wife took him in.
