He was a first postmaster of what would become Redkey.¹¹⁷ He enlisted as a Private in the Union Army on 15 Apr 1864.²¹⁶ He was "afflicted with a spinal disease that was incurable".²¹⁷ He died on 19 Feb 1881 in RedKey, Jay, Indiana. He was buried at Hillcrest Cemetery, Redkey, Jay, Indiana.
