William W. Current 1803-1851
There is no family in Vermilion county and especially in Newell township, more
prominent than the Current family. They came of sterling pioneer stock, who
came to Illinois when its vast prairies were practically a wilderness, when the
red men of the forest roamed at will and game of all kinds could be found in
abundance.
The parents of the subject of this sketch, William W. and Mary Current, were
natives of the Old Dominion, who moved to Vermilion county in the year 1827,
settling in Newell township, or rather what is Newell township now. His mother
was Miss Mary Baston, who was married to William W. Current in Roanoke county,
Virginia, on the 19th day of October, 1807. Henry Barton (sic?), her father,
was a resident of Harrison county, Virginia., until the year 1827, when the parents
of both Mr. and Mrs. Current came to Illinois and settled in this county as above
stated. They made the entire journey with ox teams, suffering many inconveniences
and privations during the long, tiresome and seemingly endless journey. They
entered Government land and for many months lived in cabins of the rudest structure.
But their hearts were brave, and being blessed with good health and strong hands,
fought a successful battle, and (in) a few years were living in comparative comfort,
and the owners of as fine farming lands as could be found anywhere in the great
west. The parents of the subject of this sketch lived in Newell township continuously,
on the old homestead, until their decease, Mr. Current dying August 6, 1851,
and Mrs. Current in 1885. Mr. Current lived a useful life, full of honor to
his community.
Mr. and Mrs. Current were the parents of fourteen children, eight of who are
still living, viz: Henry B., Missourirton, Andrew J., George, James M., Isaac
and Samuel. (only seven named) The remains of Mr. and Mrs. Current were interred
in the old Lynch burying ground in Newell township.
The parents of Mrs. Current, in the year 1848, Moved from this county to Marion
county, Iowa, where they resided a few years, when they came back to Illinois,
setting again in Newell township. They afterward returned to the Hawkeye state
where they lived until they died. Mr. Baston was 98 and his wife about the same
age. They were the parents of fourteen children, ten of whom grew to maturity
and married. One of the remarkable coincidences of the Barton (sic?) and Current
families was that both numbered fourteen children.
William W. CURRENT and Mary (Polly Baldwin/Boston) BASTIAN were married on
24 Oct 1823 in Harrison, West Virginia. Mary
(Polly Baldwin/Boston) BASTIAN130
(daughter of Henry BASTWIN and Mary (BASTIAN)) was born on 19 Oct 1807 in Harrison,
West Virginia. She died on 1 Nov 1885 in Danville, Vermilion, Illinois.26 William W. CURRENT and Mary (Polly
