- SETH WARD may have immigrated to Virginia from Bassingbourn,
Cambridge, England. SETH WARD was the immigrant ancestor of the Ward family of
Henrico, later Chesterfield, Amelia, Nottoway, Lunenburg, Charlotte, Lee and
other counties in Virginia and also in North Carolina.
SETH WARD and CAPTAIN JOHN WARD of England and Henrico, Virginia were probably
kinsmen, but certainly they were not sons of the notable BISHOP SETH WARD of
England. He may be the grandson of SETH WARD of Abbington, Cambridgeshire, England
who died in 1598 and left a will.
SETH WARD may be related as son or brother of Ancient Planter and CAPTAIN JOHN
WARDE of early Virginia as described in a will found in the Prerogative Court
of Canterbury, 51 Lewyn, written on February 14th, 1598 by SETH WARD of Abbington,
Cambridgeshire, England, yeoman, proved June 20th 1598 by JOHN WARDE. SETH WARD
named in his will his wife, ANNIS/ANNE; sons, JOHN WARDE, ENOS WARDE, and THOMAS
WARDE; Daughters MARIE WARDE and ANNE JACOB; Grandchildren JOHN WARDE and SETH
WARDE, sons of testator's son JOHN WARDE; Brother ROBERT WARD; Sister WILSONNE;
Grandchildren ANNE WARD (daughter of JOHN WARDE), MARTHA WARD, ALICE WARD and
MARIE WARD. The testator, SETH WARD, owned lands in Litlington and Stephen Norden,
Cambridgeshire. He made bequests to JOHN WARDE "the sonne of my said sonne JOHN
WARDE tenn pounds of lawfull English monie to be paid unto him at the age of
one and twentie yeares; also I give unto SETH WARD, his brother, the somme of
tenn pounds of like lawfull English monie to be paide unto him at the age of
one and twentie yeares.".
- On July 14th, 1637, Seth's son, RICHARD WARD, received a
patent for 100 acres in Varina, Henrico County, adjoining JOHN BAKER, etc. --
50 acres due for his "own personal adventure" indicating that he was an immigrant
to Virginia and an additional 50 acres by purchase (Virginia Patent Book 1, Page
440). (Cavaliers & Pioneers, Vol 1,) According to Virginia Immigrants 1623-1666,
RICHARD WARD was imported into Virginia in the year 1636, by Capt. John Chelsman,
Charles River County. Also in 1635 RICHARD WARD was shown to be imported into
Virginia by John Cheeseman, Charles River County. (John Chelsman and John Cheeseman
are more than likely one and the same man.).
- On May 30th 1634, the governor of Virginia issued a land
patent to SEATH WARD, Planter, of Varina in the upper part, a land patent, 60
aces in the upper parts, within the Corporation of Henrico, West upon the land
of DANIEL SHURLEY extending Easterly towards a tree known as Powhatan Tree and
abutting Southerly upon Three Mile Swamp, and Nly. into the maine woods, 21 year
lease expiring May 30, 1655. (Patent Book 1, Part 1, p. 148) [Cavaliers & Pioneers,
Vol 1, p 19].
- "Virginia Gleanings in England" states that on Feburary
1, 1650 SETH WARD sold acreage to MORGAN PIERCE (Henrico County records, Volume
1677-92, page 239) that SETH WARD held as a patent for 350 acres of land in the
vicinity of Varina, Henrico County, 150 acres by a former patent and 50 acres
by purchase from JOHN BAKER and 150 acres for transportation of three persons
(Virginia Patent Book 1, page 946).
- On 22 November 1643 SETH WARD patented 350 acres in the
vicinity of Varina, Henrico County of which 1250 acres by a former patent and
50 acres by purchase from JOHN BAKER and 150 acres for transporting of three
persons. (Virginia Patent Book No. 1, page 946). SETH WARD sold this land to
MORGAN PIERCE on February 1, 1650 (Henrico County Records, Volume 1677-1692,
p 239). The patent in Henrico County as recorded in Virginia Patents 1 on page
946, Library of Virginia Digital Collection, Land Office Patents and Grants.

- JNO. WILKESON ROBT. FLEETE JNO. MILLER
On July 14, 1637 RICHARD WARD patented 100 acres in Varina, Henrico County, adjoining
JOHN BAKER; 50 acres for "his own personal adventure" and 50 acres by purchase
(Virginia Patent Book No. 1, page 440). SETH WARD's land patented in 1643 included
land purchased from JOHN BAKER. According to "Virginia Gleanings in Virginia"
this RICHARD WARD has always been deemed to be a son of SETH WARD. RICHARD WARD
moved to the southside of the James River and on March 9, 1665 patented 1,337
acres on the river and Falling Creek (Virginia Patent Book 5, page 164). He served
as a magistrate in Henrico County in 1666 and died in 1682 leaving four children:
eldest son, SETH WARD; RICHARD WARD, second son; EDWARD WARD, youngest son; and
ELIZABETH WARD, daughter.
- On 24 September 1667, FRANCIS PERCE & WILLIAM PERCE patented

___. (Cavaliers & Pioneers, Vol 2, p 49).
- SETH WARD purchased additional land of one WILLIAM CLARKE
which he sold to WILLIAM WORSNAM on 2 November 1640, proven by a land
patent (Patent Book 3, p 23) dated 5 July 1653 belonging to WILLIAM WORSNAM
(WORSHAM) & GEORGE WORSNAM (WORSHAM) who filed a patent for 400 acres, Henrico
County, Patent Book 3, page 23; 200 acres being part hereof lying at the old

Title: Genealogies of Virginia Families, Volume V, Ward Fam.
- RICHARD WARD has the following deeds recorded in Henrico
County as noted in Genealogies of Virginia Families, Volume V, page 367:
1708, March 31: ROBERT THOMPSON, son & heir of ROBERT THOMPSON, late of Henrico,
decd to RICHARD WARD of Henrico, 50L sterling, 700 acres in Henrico, N side of
Branches Brook, part of 1236 ac granted Robert Thompson (father of Robert Thompson
party to these presents) decd by patent dated April 29, 1693. (Henrico Records,
Vol 1706-09, p 86).
1717, August 3: RICHARD WARD, Sr. of Henrico Co to SETH WARD of same, 50L curr.
300 acres in parish & county of Henrico, south side James River, being in 2 parcels,
viza; all land devised aid RICHARD WARD by his father RICHARD WARD, decd, as
by the said father's will dated April 18, 1682. Witnesses: Robt. Blaws, Christopher
Branch, Benjamin Ward. (Henrico Records, Vol 1714-18, p 188).
1724, July Court: The last will & testament of RICHARD WARD deceased, was proved
July 1724. Richard Ward, Junr executor; JOSEPH WARD & WALTER SCOTT as securities
for executor; MARY WARD, widow. (Henrico Records, Vol 1719-24, p 349). The will
book for this period is missing.
1724, Dec Court: Petition of MARY WARD, praying that RICHARD WARD, JR. executor
of RICHARD WARD decd, ordered to deliver her such part of said RICHARD WARD's
estate as belongs to her, & c; 1/9 part of said estate (after debts are paid)
delared to be her part. (Order Bk 1719-24, p 372). It is not clear from this
order whether said MARY was widow or child of Richard Ward. The 1/9th part is
of interest as probably indicating the number of children RICHARD WARD left at
his decease; though there may have been bequests to others than his children.
Henrico Court October 5,1725: JOHN WARD, one of orphans of RICHARD WARD decd,
acknowledge to have received his estate from his guardian, RICHARD WARD, whom
he discharges hereby from his bond. (Ibid, Vol 4, 1677-1739, p 55).
1727, August: Inventory of estate of MARY WARD, deceased, appraised August 16,
1727, total 32L; 14: 7 1/2. THOMAS BRANCH, JR., BENJAMIN BRANCH, WILLIAM BRASS,
appraisers. Returned & recorded Nov 6, 1727. (Henrico Records, Vol 1725-37, p
146).
1728, April: Account of estate of RICHARD WARD dec'd; RICHARD WARD, JR. executor.
Among items: Dr. Funeral expenses, 370 pounds of tobacco, 17 s:6. Cr., By Inventory
& appraisement, L112:11:10; By a 2nd Inventory & appraisement L8:0:8. Presented

- "COLONIAL JUSTICE IN VIRGINIA" by Chumbly:"Horseracing was
considered a sport, but was, in early years, considered a diversion only for
the Gentry---as illustrated by the classic case in 1674 when one Bullock, a tailor,
was fined by a County Court for racing his horse against the entry of a Physician,
a sport only for Gentlemen." Middle of 18th century the sport became generally
popular.
- ASSIGNMENT-1. Something assigned, as a particular task or

Law: the transference of a right, interest or title, or the instrument of a right,

Remember that Mary Parker was still alive Oct. 1686 when Katherine Banks Royall
Isham made her will. (2 1/2 Years earlier.)
I believe this signifies that Richard's mother, Mary Perkins Parker, has died,
and this is inheritance, from her, due a deceased daughter which would legally
go to the daughter's eldest son.
John Cannon was born 1643 and his present wife, Hester/Ester Pledge Cannon was
born 1663. Others may reach a different conclusion, but I think I should give
my thoughts to this.

- Sources for Robert - not Richard or John - being the husband
of Jane
Bankhead Taliaferro are:
(1) Caroline County, Virginia Court Records: Probate and other Records from the
Court Order and Minute Books 1781-1799, edited by Kimberly C. Campbell, 1999,
on p. 45 is "Robert Taliaferro (Will) February 1791." The Will is not on The
Virginia State Library, Richmond, microfilm - the original records were probably
destroyed, said the librarian at VSL.
(2) And on p. 47 of Campbell: "July 1791 Robert Taliaferro (Jane Taliaferro's
renunciation of all benefits under the Will of her late husband.)" Note: "Renunciation"
is a legal maneuver that releases a spouse's dower interest, primarily used when
the surviving spouse is provided for in other ways.
(3) In Virginia County Court Records: Caroline County, Virginia Land Book Alterations
1792-1795, edited by Ruth & Sam Sparacio, 1996, p. 40, in 1793 (2 years after
Robert's Will was recorded) 367 acres is transferred "from ROBERT TALIAFERRO'S
ESTATE to JANE TALIAFERRO" and 733 acres is transferred "from ROBERT TALIAFERRO's
ESTATE to WILLIAM TALIAFERRO" and 410 acres "from ROBERT TALIAFERRO's ESTATE
to NORBORNE TALIAFERRO. These are obviously Robert's wife and 2 eldest sons who
later died.
(4) Virginia Herald (Fredericksburg) 6 Dec 1792, page 1, column 3: "On Tuesday,
the 18th of December, if fair, if not, the next fair day, will be sold, at Blenheim,
the late residence of Robert Taliaferro, deceased, all the stock of horses, .
. . "
(5) Orange Co VA Deed Book 22, pg. 132, 12/22/00, describes Hay Taliaferro, son
of Robert.

Septr. 21, 1772. Robert Taliaferro and Jane, his wife, of Caroline Co. to Long
Wharton of Co. afsd. £80 curr. 550 a. in Spts. Co. Daniel Starke, Joseph
Bridges, James Livingston. Nov. 20, 1772.
(7) The Douglas Register (Notes of the Rev. William Douglas from 1750-1797),
pg. 353 of the reprint and pg. 137 of original: "1788--Dr. Ja. Bankhead died,
he had 6 children, 3 sons & 3 daughters. . . . Of his daughters one married Mr.
Rob. Talliferrar and has 8 children. . . ." Douglas names 2 of the 3 Bankhead
daughters as Elizabeth m. Peter Thornton and Martha still single. Bankhead genealogy
also confirms "Jane" as a daughter.
Conclusion: I think we can safely say - along with Wayne Rogers - that JANE TALIAFERRO
of Caroline County is the WIDOW of ROBERT TALIAFERRO of "Blenheim" Caroline County
died 1791. The fact that 2 Bankheads also gave depositions in the court records
found in the Loose Papers of Caroline County at VSL also lends weight to JANE
TALIAFERRO's having BANKHEAD connections, but I don't think there is any doubt
in the Taliaferro Research Arena that Jane Taliaferro of Blenheim who died in
1832 at the age of 95 is anyone other than Jane Bankhead, daughter of Dr. James
Bankhead. The settlement of Jane Taliaferro's estate in Loose Papers of Caroline
County clearly names her children and grandchildren. Hay is a named son (see
# 5 above). Our Richard H. Taliaferro is a named son and Peachy R. Taliaferro
is a named grandson.

by Henry G. Taliaferro, in Volume 40, Number 1 (January-March, 1996) of The Virginia
Genealogist. Spotsylvania Co., VA DB B (1729-1734), dated 2 Nov 1731, is a conveyance
of 400 acres in Spots. Co from Augustine Smith of Spots. Co., Gent., to his eldest
son, Thomas Smith of Spots. Co., Gent, land "whereon said Thomas now dwells and
for some time past has dwelt." Spotsylvania Co., VA DB B (1729-1734), dated 3
Jul 1733, is a conveyance of Lots 21 and 22 in Fredericksburg, from Thomas Smith
of Spots. Co., Gent., to Thomas Hill of same co. Anne Smith wife of Thomas Smith
acknowledged her dower, etc. Indenture dated 24 Dec 1750, recorded 1 Apr 1751
in DB C Pages 110-112, Fairfax Co., VA., conveys 598 acres from Thomas Smith
and Anne Fowke Smith, his wife, of Truro Parish in Fairfax County, to daughters,
Susannah Smith and Mary Smith, for natural love and affection, the parcel where
Thomas and Anne then lived, in Fairfax Co., formerly Stafford County, to be divided
equally between them. It also mentions in the property description "... William
Darrell and his wife Ann, the daughter of Col George Mason." The land originated
in a land grant to Thomas Standiford in 1703/4, referred to in "Beginning at
a White Oak: Patents & Northern Neck Grants," (1977), by Beth Mitchell.

. . . . the immediate information regarding the Ann Ligon I "know." I might have
a little more information on her. For instance, I know that her son Moses Norris
had to go back to Virginia to take care of her will when she died. I will have
to check what I have at home. Most of this information has been handed down or
researched by relatives.
Sincerely,
Scott Norris
