Mary Ward HATCHER and John BURTON were married in 1676 in Virginia. John BURTON was born in 1656 in Longfield, Henrico, Virginia. He died on 2 Feb 1679/80 in Barbados, West Indies. John Burton was born about 1656, ten years before his father, John Burton I, secured a patent for land at-Longfield. John Burton Junr. appeared in the Henrico County tithable list of 1679 made to comply with-An act for the defence of the country against the incursions of the Indian Enemy. The king could call on five men in Burton's household for defense.

Mary and John had a young daughter, Elizabeth Burton, before he died in Henrico County in 1679/80 (will dated 30 Dec. 1679, recorded 2 Feb. 1679/80). Burton left property to his brothers and sisters and the remainder of his estate to his wife and child. On 1 April 1682, Gilbert Elam II, the bereaved widow's future husband, presented Burton's inventory in court.

Henrico County court records concerning the administration of the estate of Mary (Hatcher) Burton's dead little daughter show Mary married second Gilbert Elam II. Gilbert II was evidently a respected citizen of Henrico County. He was a constable, grand jury foreman, and active land buyer and seller. With his father and Edward Ward, Gilbert secured a patent to 2,015 acres in Varina Parish, Henrico County. Mary Ward HATCHER and John BURTON had the following children:
