SMITH was born on 19 Nov 1655 in Dedham, Suffolk (later Norfolk), Massachusetts
Bay. He died on 7 Oct 1722 in Needham, Suffolk (later Norfolk), Massachusetts.
The Smith Family of Ashford, Conn:
John Smith was born on November 19, 1655, at Dedham, Massachusetts [VR], and
was the only son of Christopher and Martha (Fairbanks) Smith. He lived initially
at Dedham, where he was a constable in 1694, a fence viewer in 1695, 1697-1701
and 1705, a field driver in 1696, a tithingman in 1697-1700, a surveyor of highways
in 1699 and 1702, and selectman in 1707 and 1708.
In 1701 he was living at what is now Needham, Massachusetts, presumably on the
eastern side of the present High Rock Street, between Chestnut and South Streets
[History of Needham].
On May 2, 1709, he was appointed to a committee of three to build a new bridge
over the Charles River, and on April 9, 1711, he was designated as one of two
men to perambulate the line between Dedham and Watertown. He died October 7,
1772 at Needham.
His will calls Aaron and Samuel his two youngest sons; Samuel is an executor.
