Ninth Generation

297. Richard (*) WARD was born on 29 Oct 1692 in "Sheffield", Varina Parish, Henrico, Virginia. He died in Jan 1762 in Cornwall Parish, Lunenburg, Virginia.

RICHARD WARD, who lived in Cumberland, Brunswick , and in Lunenburg County where he died and possibly in Prince Edward County, is the son of Captain SETH WARD and ANN HATCHER of Henrico County as proven by Henrico Court Records (See notes on Seth Ward & Ann Hatcher). RICHARD was born 29 October 1692 at Sheffield Plantation in Henrico County, Virginia as the third of four sons of SETH and ANN. His brothers were SETH WARD who married MARTHA WORSHAM, JOSEPH WARD who married SARAH STEWART, and BENJAMIN WARD who married ANNE ANDERSON. His step-father was WILLIAM BLACKMAN.

About 1716 RICHARD WARD married firstly, FRANCES (Surname unknown), by whom he had two known children, BENJAMIN WARD in 1717 and TAHPANES WARD in 1729, wife of PHILIP WEBBER. In 1759 he married secondly MARY JOHNS, by whom he had a son named RICHARD WARD, Jr. about 1760, shortly before RICHARD WARD, SR. died in 1762 at Lunenburg County, Virginia. What became of MARY JOHNS WARD or their son, RICHARD WARD, JR., cannot be clearly established as of this writing. RICHARD WARD led an interesting and colorful life. He lived at various times in Brunswick County, Cumberland County, Henrico, and Lunenburg in Virginia and was briefly in Granville County, North Carolina. He was frequently involved in legal disputes as is evidenced through various court records. RICHARD WARD had many descendants: three known children and thirteen known grand-children,& sixty-two known great-grandchildren. [-Brenda H. Reed, RootsWeb]

Richard (*) WARD and Mary JOHNS were married on 2 May 1759 in Lunenburg, Virgina. Mary JOHNS was born before 1739 in Lunenburg, Virgina. She died between 1761 and 1765 in Lunenburg, Virgina.

Richard (*) WARD and Frances (*) WORSHAM were married on 18 Dec 1716 in Probably Henrico, Virginia. Frances (*) WORSHAM (daughter of Charles WORSHAM and Mary (Bevill) BELVILLE) was born on 14 Sep 1700 in Bermuda Hundred, Henrico, Virginia. She had 2 children and 17 known grandchildren. She died in .

The Ward Family Record that was owned by Daniel Ward, grandson of Richard and Frances Ward, indicates that FRANCES WARD was born September 14th, 1700. Her surname was not cited in the record. In about 1716 Frances married Richard Ward, son of Captain Seth Ward and Anne Hatcher Ward of Henrico County, Virginia. It was recorded that she gave birth to a son, BENJAMIN WARD, on September 18th, 1717 at age seventeen. On March 29th, 1729, Frances at age twenty-eight had a daughter named TAHPENES WARD. FRANCES was deceased by 1759 when her widower husband, RICHARD WARD married secondly Mary Johns in Lunenburg County, Virginia. Their son, Benjamin, married firstly c1738 to a woman only known to us as Missy, by whom he had one son named Daniel Ward of Franklin County, Virginia. Circa 1745 Benjamin married secondly Mary Duke, daughter of James Duke and Mary Byrd of Westover, Charles City County, Virginia, by whom he had six known children; their place of residence has not yet been fully established. Her daughter, Tahpenes Ward married Philip Webber; they lived out their lives in Cumberland County, Virginia. Frances was survived by fourteen known grandchildren who removed to different parts of the country. No references to date have been found that Frances relinquished her dower rights in any of the numerous land transactions of her husband, Richard Ward; this again indicates that she died before Richard Ward.

Traditionally, Frances Ward is identified as having been a Worsham. A Bible passed down among the descendants of Tahpenes (Ward) Webber is said to identify Frances as a Worsham without identifying her parents by name. Frances was perhaps a daughter of Charles Worsham and his wife, Mary Bevill. As Tahpenes (Ward) Webber named a daughter, Ann Bevill Webber, this certainly seems to support this theory regarding the identity of her parents. Ideally, Ward researchers would like to have concrete proof to confirm Frances Ward's placement in the Worsham family. This is made difficult by the destruction of so many Henrico Co., VA records. The only thing we know with any degree of confidence is the given name of Frances and her birth date. Her maiden surname and her proposed parentage are based on a proponderance of the surviving evidence, which is meager at best.

After Charles Worsham died, his wife, Mary Bevill Worsham, was involved in a court case and in her deposition she stated she had 3 sons & 2 daughters. Charles & Mary descendants in Henrico Co., VA; Prince George Co., VA., Brunswick Co., VA, Chesterfield Co., VA.

On April 25, 2005, Researcher, Steve Jennings (mrstevejennings@yahoo.com) provided t\the following information: "The tradition of this Ward family is that Frances was a Worsham. I want to back this up and try to prove it. A lady I have written back and forth who researches the Worshams said that Frances may have been one of the two daughters of Charles Worsham (died 1712 in Henrico County, Virginia) and Mary Bevill. Court records mention that Charles and Mary Worsham had five children, three sons and two daughters. The sons have been pinned down pretty much. Only one is known for 100 percent and that's William. Essex and Francis are pretty sure bets. The girls remain unidentified, but the court records do mention that there were two girls. I don't see any other Worshams that Frances could belong to. In addition to the tradition that Frances was a Worsham is the fact that Richard and Frances Ward's daughter, Tahpenes Ward Webber, named a daughter Ann Bevill Webber. I've not found a Bevill connection anywhere on either side of Ann's family, except for the possibility that her grandmother, Frances, was the daughter of Charles Worsham and Mary Bevill. The Wards and Worshams were connected through the marriage of Seth Ward, Richard Ward's brother, to Martha Worsham, a niece of Charles Worsham. So, if the family tradition is right, the brothers Seth and Richard Ward would have married first cousins. Charles and Mary Worsham would have named a son Francis and a daughter Frances Worsham. The Worsham researcher said that Frances (the girl) and Francis (the boy) might have been twins. I don't know about that one. I do know that back in those days it wasn't unheard of for parents to sometimes name two children the same name. Since the situation here was with a boy and a girl, I don't see that there is a problem."

Researcher, Steve Jennings (mrstevejennings@yahoo.com) provided information to from the Webber-Ligon Bible by email to this researcher on 30 June 2005. He stated the following: " This was taken from the Webber-Ligon Bible. RICHARD WARD married FRANCES WORSHAM and had a daughter, TAHPENES WARD, who married PHILIP WEBBER. Their daughter, ANNE BEVILL WEBBER, married RICHARD LIGON. The Webber-Ligon Bible was last known to be owned by a descendant, Mrs. WILLIAM HENRY GRAHAM. The Webber-Ligon Bible records the following marriage: RICHARD WARD and FRANCES WORSHAM was married December 18th 1716. The Bible does not identify the parents of Frances Worsham, but it does identify her as a Worsham. The fact that Richard Ward and Frances Worsham's daughter, Tahpenes, named a daughter Anne Bevill Webber points to the fact that Frances was one of the two daughters of Charles Worsham and Mary Bevill."

Jack Webber posted 28 October 2005 on Genforum the following message. "I don't know any of the Graham descendants and don't know where the Bible is today. It was owned by Mrs. Graham in 1907. I have a transcript copy of the Bible record. Here's what the transcript says, as you may find it helpful."

Note:

The Ward Family Record was passed down from DANIEL WARD, oldest son of BENJAMIN WARD and his first wife, to his daughter ELIZABETH WARD MARCUM, who then passed the document to her granddaughter, Mary Ann Hansard, the grandmother of Mary Lorena Hansard Wilson of Sweetwater, Tennessee. The document was in Lorena Wilson's hands until the last period of her life when it fell into the hands of another relative whose name is not known to this researcher.

Virginia Smith, who visited with Lorena Wilson in about 1980, generously provided a copy of the document to this researcher (Brenda Reed). Mrs. Wilson allowed her to take the Ward Family Record, copy it, and return it to her on the day of the visit.

Mrs. Smith states: "I was on pins and needles as you can imagine!" Mrs. Wilson had recently published her grandmother's writings and mentioned at that time that she wanted to place the originals with a Tennessee library along with the family record and other papers. Whether she carried out that wish before her death, Mrs. Smith did not know, but she assumed her children followed her wishes.

Mrs. Smith states that the Ward Family Record consists of only one page that was almost certainly removed from a Bible. Originally belonging to Richard Ward (1692-1762) of Lunenburg County, Virginia.

It was inherited by his grandson Daniel Ward (1739-1826) of Franklin County, Virginia. It then passed to his daughter, Elizabeth Markham, and to her granddaughter, Mary Ann Hansard, grandmother of Mary Lorena Wilson. The entries appeared to all be in the same hand and ink except for the last, recording the death of Daniel Ward.

The death entry of Daniel Ward appears in a different hand and ink and would have been recorded shortly after his death. The other entries appear to have been recorded in the mid-1700s (after 1739).

The Journal of DR. WILLIAM WARD, son of BENJAMIN WARD & MARY DUKE, contains the following entry:

"MARY WARD Relict of BENJAMIN WARD and Daughter of JAMES & MARY DUKE of Virginia Departed this Life October 8th 1805 Aged 80 years." This record was posted by Bill Jones on the GenForum on October 21, 2002. The entry was copied from Dr. Ward's Journal, owned by WILLIAM MARKHAM, who got the Journal from his father (PETER MARKHAM/MARCUM), who in turn got it from DR. WILLIAM WARD'S widow, MARY POLLY ROBERTSON WARD of Rutherford County, Tennessee. Dr. Ward's Journal contains information he recorded about his family, medical remedies, patients, and slaves he owned. Mr. Jones wrote that MARY DUKE WARD was a niece of WILLIAM BYRD, II of Westover. Her sentiments were with the British during the American Revolution. She was a haughty lady, proud of her kin.

The Ward Family record establishes the following:
RICHARD WARD, son of SETH WARD, was born October 29th 1692.
FRANCES, his wife, was born September 14th 1700.
BENJAMIN WARD, son of RICHARD WARD, was born September 18th 1717. TAHPANES WARD, daughter of RICHARD WARD, was born March 29, 1729. DANIEL WARD, son of BENJAMIN WARD, was born May 4th 1739 and died January 29th 1826.

In the Will of RICHARD WARD, dated 17 November 1759 and proved 2 February 1762 Cornwall Parish, Lunenburg County, Virginia, said RICHARD WARD devised to his son,

Friend, SEATH WARD and PERRIN ALDAY served as his executors. The will was witnessed by ABRA MARTIN, NEAL FRANK, & JOSHUA WHARTON.

The above will proves that Richard Ward had three children: BENJAMIN WARD, TAHPANES WARD, and a third child as issue of Richard & Mary Ward, who was named RICHARD WARD as proven by administration of Richard Ward, Sr. estate in Lunenburg County.

It is unknown if the Benjamin Ward of this record is the one mentioned in this deed: April 8 1766, Charlotte Co., VA Deed Book 1, page 11: THOMAS JONES of Charlotte County to MATHEW MARABLE of same for 50 pounds, 325 acres in Charlotte. Note:

TAHPANES WARD was the daughter of RICHARD & FRANCES WORSHAM WARD as proven by the WARD FAMILY RECORD that was passed down through the generations to MARY ANN HANSARD WILSON and through the WEBBER/LIGON FAMILY BIBLE RECORD. TAHPANES WARD was born March 29, 1729 probably in Brunswick County, Virginia. She married PHILIP WEBBER March 14th, 1751 in Cumberland County, Virginia. She died, leaving a will January 20th, 1794 in Cumberland County, Virginia. She had a family of ten children, seven sons and three daughters; two daughters and a son died in childhood. Her ten children were: John Webber, Frances Webber, Richard Webber, Essex Webber, Philip Webber, Benjamin Webber, Seth Ward Webber, Mary Webber, Simeon Webber, and Ann Bevill Webber. The following records have been found regarding her life.

On October 14th, 1751, at the age of twenty-one, TAHPANES WARD married PHILIP WEBBER, son of PHILIP WEBBER and ANNIS PAISLEY, in Cumberland County, Virginia.

On September 5th, 1754, Prince Edward County, Patent Book 25:217 [Same as listed in Amelia County Patent Book 25:217]: RICHARD WARD of Cumberland County gifted to his daughter TAHPENES WARD of Cumberland County, as a deed of gift, 400 acres in Prince Edward County, on Appomattox River, adjoining JOSEPH WARD, JOHN JOHNSON, DAVID GREENHILL, formerly HENRY DAWSON. Witness: BENJAMIN WARD. (Prince Edward Records, Deed Book I, page 15) This is the same 400 acres that RICHARD WARD acquired August 28th, 1746 in Prince Edward County, prior to the formation of that county from Amelia County in 1753. Amelia County (later Prince Edward), 400 acres S side Appomattox River adjoining Osborne's line, beginning at Osborne's corner white oak on the river; formerly granted to JOHN DAWSON, since deceased, 30 July 1738, and HENRY DAWSON, son & heir of said JOHN DAWSON, failing to seat, same is now granted to RICHARD WARD. [Additional source: William & Mary Quarterly, Volume V 27, page 263] [1746, August 28: Amelia County, Patent Book 25: 217 (later Prince Edward) 400 acres South side Appomattox River adjoining Osborne's line, beginning at Osborne's corner white oak on the river; formerly granted to JOHN DAWSON, since deceased, 30 July 1738, and HENRY DAWSON son & heir of said John Dawson, failing to seat, same is now granted to RICHARD WARD.]

[Note: this appears to be the land mentioned in Richard Ward's will as that which was to be passed to his child by Mary Johns.]

The following record indicates Tahpanes Ward Webber had a sister named Catherine Ward, daughter of Richard Ward by his second wife, Mary Johns. Tahpanes died just two years after making this deed of gift.

1792, 7 January: Person Co. NC Record of Deeds Bk. A pg 18-19.

NC for the love and affection of their sister and for her children, negroes JAMES, RACHEL, ANNIS, BEN; 7 Jan. 1792. witnessed by WILLIAM HAYNE, WILLIAM WAITE. (This indicates Richard Ward was Catherine's father as opposed to John Ward who certified that Catherine was 21 on her marriage bond but he did not state his relationship to her.)

In 1797 after the death of both parents, Tahpenes' daughter, ANN WEBBER, married RICHARD W. LIGON in Amelia County. It is not known what became of her.

Researcher, Steve Jennings (mrstevejennings@yahoo.com) provided information from the Webber-Ligon Bible by email to this researcher on 30 June 2005. He stated the following:

"This was taken from the Webber-Ligon Bible.

The identity of Mrs. William Henry Graham who once owned the Ward-Ligon family Bible is as follows:

MRS. WILLIAM HENRY GRAHAM was born LUCY ALFRED "Allie" WOOD, on 1 May 1857 at Amelia County and died probably at Sewanee, TN. She married WILLIAM HENRY GRAHAM, born 3 Nov 1856 at Hamilton County and died 17 Jan 1910 at Sewanee, TN.

LUCY WOOD was the daughter of WILLIAM RICHARD WOOD, born c1823 at 7 Oaks, Amelia County, VA; and his wife, LUCY HENRY SOUTHALL of "Selma", Amelia County, VA, md. 19 August 1845 at Amelia County.

WILLIAM was the son of TABITHA WARD LIGON, born 10 June 1804 at Amelia County and died October 1887; married on 20 Dec 1822 ALFRED WOOD, 1803-c1850 of Amelia County.

TABITHA was the daughter of ANN BEVILL WEBBER, born 1768 at Goochland Co., VA and died c 8 August 1844 at Hopkins Co., KY; married 10 September 1797 at Amelia County, VA to RICHARD WILLIAM LIGON, born 29 June 1773 at Amelia County and died 1835 at Hopkins County, KY.

ANN BEVILL WEBBER was the daughter of TAHPANES WARD and PHILLIP WEBBER.

TAHPANES WARD was the daughter of RICHARD WARD & FRANCES WORSHAM.

RICHARD WARD was the son of CAPTAIN SETH WARD and ANN HATCHER.

FRANCES WORSHAM was the daughter of CHARLES WORSHAM and MARY BEVILLE.

Note: The name "TAHPANES" comes from the Bible, Jeremiah 2:16 and 44:1. Tahpanhes was an Egyptian city where Jeremiah was taken along with the remnant of Judah that Nebuchadrezzar left behind in Judea when he took the people captive to Babylon. This city is called Tehaphnehes in Ezekiel 30:18. Sometime when naming a child families would open up the Holy Bible and the first name that they saw would become the name of the child. Perhaps this is how Tahpanes Ward was given her most unusual name.
