An Honest Man |
By Marge Clauser |
In the interest of full public disclosure, I must admit that when I first met Lou
Benton I was not sure if I liked him or not. It was one of those “snap” judgments
that we humans make. I thought to myself, “This guy Benton is a little rough around the edges and he is quite opinionated.” As Benton spoke at city commission, planning and budget meetings, I begin to notice things about him. He spoke only when he had knowledge of an issue. He did not have a hidden agenda. His view represented what was fair for the majority of citizens. I started to pay more attention to the message than the messenger. In doing so, another interesting attribute became clear. Lou Benton has an excellent memory - almost photographic recall. |
A land-use attorney appeared before the PLDRC and made some statements on behalf
of his client. Lou immediately questioned the lawyer, stating that his present
position was in conflict with prior statements made before the board. The attorney
denied that there was any change in position. After a review of the minutes
from past meetings, Lou’s opinion was validated. In addition to serving as a member of the planning board and as a city commissioner, Lou Benton has volunteered countless hours to various city projects – Lake Macy Park, the Equestrian Center, Melissa Park and the Creative Arts Café. I believe Lou Benton is an honest man. You don’t have to guess where he stands on an issue. Just ask him. You may not agree with him on every point but you can be sure he tells every person the same answer. With Lou – what you see is what you get. He is a working man, dedicated to the citizens of Lake Helen. He will again be a good City Commissioner. |
