For the people, by the people, and about the people of Lake Helen, Florida |
American Legion Post #127 |
Besides hosting the associations already mentioned, the American Legion will be giving Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets to needy Veteran families. The Auxiliary will be collecting new toys or items to give to the Emory Bennett Nursing Veterans so they can give them to their grandchildren or family members. The Legion will have boxes for Toys for Tots. Last year certificates were give to outstanding persons for service in Law and Order, Firefighter, Paramedic, and Teach of the Year positions. This year Post #127 would like to have an awards and banquet dinner in honor of these special people. Also, on the wish list is to sponsor a young man or woman as candidates for the Boys’ State or Girls’ State (two are sent from each state) to go to Washington for Boys and Girls Nation! First convened in 1946, each delegate acts as a senator from their state, caucus, and form committees that conduct hearings on bills submitted by program delegates. Not only do they learn the proper procedure for handling bills according to U.S. Senate rules, the week includes lecturees, forums, and visits to Federal agencies, institutions, memorials, and historical sites, plus meetings with elected officials from their home states. Donations are requested (approximately $350 per delegate is needed) to make this magnificent opportunity happen. Schedule of Events 1st Monday of the month @ 4:00 PM - Executive Bd meeting open to all members 2nd Saturday of the month @ 7:00 PM - USMVMC Meeting 3rd Monday of the Month @ 7:00 PM - Regular Meeting Tuesdays @ 7:00 PM - Boy Scouts Wednesdays @ 7:00 PM - Cub Scouts Mondays - 1:00 - 4:00 PM - Cards Thursdays - 1:00 - 4:00 PM - Pool (content approved by Commander O’Hara) |
Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, United States Military Veterans Motorcycle Club (USMVMC),
and Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) - what do they have in common?
Their meetings are held at the Lake Helen American Legion at little or no cost
to their associations! Largely due to the efforts of the members of the local chapter, this historic landmark is being rejuvenated and coming back to life. Formed nine days after Pearl Harbor’s bombing in 1941, Commander O’Hara is seeking member and volunteers in the effort to continue revitalizing and improving this excellent facility. Any veteran who served during wartime may become a member and any spouse, widow, mother, daughter, or granddaughter of a member or deceased member may join as an auxiliary member! Volunteers need not be members. |
